Why do Screen Shots turn Black? (Netflix, Disney+)
Ever tried to screenshot a movie only to get a black box? Here is why it happens and how DRM works.
You’re watching a great scene and want to share it, but the screenshot is just black. This is not a bug—it’s a feature called DRM (Digital Rights Management).
1. Why it happens
Streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime use an encrypted video path. Browsers and OS-level screenshot tools are blocked from “seeing” the content to prevent piracy.
2. Is there a workaround?
On mobile devices, there is no easy way to bypass this without rooting or jailbreaking (which we don’t recommend). On desktop, sometimes disabling Hardware Acceleration in your browser settings (Chrome/Edge) can allow a capture, but this may degrade video quality.
3. Privacy Apps
Some banking apps or “incognito” browser modes also block screenshots to protect your sensitive data from malicious screen-scraping malware.
