How to Screen Record using the Windows 11 Snipping Tool

Don't just take pictures—learn how to capture high-quality video of your desktop with the built-in recorder.

The classic Snipping Tool isn’t just for images anymore. It is now a fully-fledged screen recorder.

1. Entering Video Mode

  1. Open the Snipping Tool.
  2. At the top, select the Camcorder icon.
  3. Click the + New button.

2. Selecting the Area

Unlike some tools that record the whole screen, Snipping Tool lets you drag a box to record only a specific portion of your screen. This is great for keeping your desktop icons or private tabs out of the video.

3. Recording and Saving

  1. Click Start.
  2. When finished, click the Stop button in the recording bar.
  3. You can preview the video instantly and save it as an MP4 file.

4. Limitations

Note that currently, Snipping Tool does not support advanced features like webcam overlay or system audio recording as effectively as the Xbox Game Bar or 3rd party tools like OBS.
